Comparison · ShelfLifePro vs Tally Prime

ShelfLifePro + Tally Prime — better together.

The expiry + AI + retail ops layer your Tally stack is missing. With two-way Tally sync, nothing about your accountant's workflow changes — they still work in Tally Prime, they just get cleaner vouchers with fewer manual corrections.

Not a Tally replacement — the intelligence layer on top. Think of it as what WhatsApp is to SMS: same pipe, different product.

Is this page for you?

This comparison is for operators who are:

  • Running Tally Prime for books and want to add modern retail + POS + AI on top
  • Tired of double entry: bills in one system, then re-keyed into Tally
  • Want batch + expiry tracking, FEFO at POS, and WhatsApp alerts without disrupting the CA's Tally workflow
  • Running 2-10 stores and need real-time multi-location without changing accounting software
  • Owner wants a 6 AM AI briefing on the phone; accountant still wants Tally on the desktop

Not a replacement — an intelligence layer.

Tally Prime is the books-of-record for Indian SMBs — accountants love it, regulators accept it, it's been battle-tested across three tax regimes. We're not trying to move you off it. ShelfLifePro runs as the retail ops + expiry intelligence layer on top of Tally, and every sales / purchase voucher syncs back to Tally automatically. You get modern retail ops; your CA keeps doing exactly what they already do.

The honest take

Where Tally Prime fits, where it doesn't, and what we built ShelfLifePro to do differently.

Why Indian SMBs love Tally — and why you shouldn't replace it just for retail ops

Tally Prime earns the affection it gets. Three decades of accountant-trained workflows, unmatched reliability across tax regime changes, a CA ecosystem that speaks Tally as a second language, and a user base that includes practically every listed Indian company's subsidiaries and thousands of their suppliers. "Books of record" is a phrase Tally has earned.

Ripping Tally out to install a new cloud retail ERP is almost always the wrong move. Your accountant has encoded years of chart-of-account wisdom in it. Your CA reconciles GSTR with it on the 10th and 20th every month. Your banker audits it during credit renewals. Tally is load-bearing infrastructure, and load-bearing infrastructure is exactly the thing you don't rewrite just because the retail-facing UI feels dated.

Where Tally on its own starts to feel thin

The gaps show up on the operational side. Tally was built as a books-of-record, not as a retail-floor operating system. Batch + expiry tracking exists but needs configuration and isn't enforced by any workflow. The POS module is bolt-on and feels grafted. There's no 6 AM AI briefing that summarizes yesterday's waste and today's action list. There's no near-expiry markdown engine that calculates the right discount per batch and writes the WhatsApp copy. There's no photo-to-GRN OCR that collapses 45-minute receiving to 5 minutes.

This isn't a knock on Tally — the product was designed for accountants, and it does that job better than anything else in Indian software. It's a statement about which problem it's not solving: the perishable retailer's daily operational grind.

What "intelligence layer on top of Tally" actually means

ShelfLifePro runs as the system-of-engagement — the screen your cashiers, warehouse staff, store managers, and owner look at every day. Every sale rings up on the ShelfLifePro POS with FEFO enforcement and barcode scanning. Every supplier invoice is photographed and OCR'd into a GRN. Overnight automations ship the 6 AM priority read plus the day's suggested actions.

Every transaction is then synced to Tally Prime in Tally's native XML format — sales vouchers, purchase vouchers, receipts, payments, journal adjustments. Your accountant opens Tally on the 10th to file GSTR and sees the clean vouchers already there, with HSN codes, party ledgers, and tax splits correctly mapped. Two-way sync means Tally-side edits (ledger reconciliations, journal entries, year-end adjustments) flow back to ShelfLifePro too.

Result: one retail-floor UI for operations, one books-of-record for accounting, zero double-entry between them. The CA keeps doing exactly what they already do. You get the AI layer and the modern retail ops.

Real-world setup across multi-store pharmacies, supermarkets, FMCG distributors

Typical setup: Tally Prime stays at the accountant's office and becomes read-only for store staff. ShelfLifePro runs on counter PCs, warehouse tablets, and store manager phones. Daily sync pushes transactions from ShelfLifePro to Tally; weekly sync pulls ledger balances back. For multi-location businesses we support location-wise Tally companies or a single consolidated company — whatever your CA prefers.

Onboarding takes about 10 days end-to-end. Week 1 is data import from your current Tally + Marg/Vyapar/Excel mess. Week 2 is the Tally sync configuration plus the first cutover store. After that, you add stores one at a time or all at once, depending on comfort level.

Pricing side-by-side

Tally is perpetual-license + TSS (Tally Software Services). ShelfLifePro is a monthly SaaS that complements it. The two aren't in direct pricing comparison — they solve different problems.

Frequently asked questions

If your question isn't here, book a 15-min call — we'll answer live.

Do I have to replace Tally to use ShelfLifePro?

No. That's the whole point of this pairing. Tally stays as your books-of-record. ShelfLifePro runs on top of it with two-way sync. Your accountant doesn't have to learn new software.

How does the two-way Tally sync actually work?

ShelfLifePro exports sales / purchase / receipt / payment vouchers in Tally-native XML format. You can either auto-push to Tally via Tally.NET or download the XML and import into Tally manually. Ledger balances, party masters, and stock items can be pulled from Tally in the reverse direction.

Does this work for multi-branch Tally setups?

Yes. Location-wise Tally companies, single consolidated company, or a mix — all supported. Each ShelfLifePro location can be mapped to a specific Tally company and ledger set.

Can my accountant still work the way they always have?

Yes — and this is the most common question. Your accountant opens Tally Prime the same way they did last year. The only difference is the vouchers are pre-populated with clean data from ShelfLifePro, so they spend less time on manual entry and more time on actual accounting.

What about Tally features like payroll, fixed asset register, or audit reports?

Those stay in Tally. ShelfLifePro doesn't try to replicate Tally's accounting depth — we do retail ops + AI expiry + invoicing, then hand the vouchers over. Anything else financial-reporting-related lives in Tally.
